A WordPress development agency UK owners stop needing.

Eleven published builds, one of them a British WooCommerce furniture store the client has run themselves since launch — 32 products added without us touching it. That last part is the whole point.

Why you are probably here

WordPress does not rot. Sites get rotted.

Most people looking for a WordPress development agency UK-side are not starting from a blank page. Around a third of the work that reaches us is a rescue rather than a build, and the failures are remarkably consistent. All three are preventable at build time and expensive afterwards.

The plugin tower

Fourteen plugins, four of them doing the same job, two abandoned by their developers, one holding an unpatched vulnerability, and nobody remembers why any of them were installed. Every one felt reasonable on the day. The compound effect is a site that is slow, fragile and frightening to update — and updating is exactly what stops it being compromised. A good WordPress website development UK buyers commission starts by refusing plugins, not by collecting them.

The page builder you cannot leave

Builders are genuinely useful and they are also a lock-in decision nobody frames as one: content built in one is not portable, and switching means rebuilding every page by hand. That is a fine trade when it is chosen deliberately — Calesce runs on Elementor precisely so the client can edit without us — and a bad surprise when it is discovered at redesign time. We say which you are choosing.

The site nobody can edit

The most expensive failure, and the quietest. A site is delivered, the agency keeps the admin login, the client asks for a price change and is quoted for an hour. Six months later nothing has been updated because updating means raising a purchase order. A site your team cannot change is a site that stops being true, and that costs far more than the maintenance retainer it was meant to save.

Calesce, and what it actually proves

How it runs

Built to be handed over.

01

Site teardown

Free, written, inside 48 hours. Plugins to remove, what is slowing it down, and anything currently unpatched.

02

Scope and fixed price

Every template, the plugin list agreed up front, and what is explicitly out.

03

Build on staging

Your live site keeps working. You review the new one at a URL from week one.

04

Launch, hand over, walk through

Admin, hosting, domain in your name — plus a session showing whoever runs it what is safe to change.

Money

How we quote WordPress work.

New site, fixed scope

Brochure sites and WooCommerce stores. One written scope, one price in pounds, sent inside 48 hours of the teardown call.

  • Plugin list agreed up front
  • Editable by your team
  • Full admin handover

Rescue and speed-up

A site that is slow, broken, unpatched, or inherited from someone unreachable. Scoped from the free teardown as a fixed piece of work.

  • Named plugins, not a report
  • Security pass included
  • No retainer required

Maintenance

Updates, backups and security applied on a schedule with someone accountable. Monthly, cancellable with notice.

  • Cancel with notice
  • Updates on a clock
  • You keep the credentials

No figures on this site, in any currency. WordPress quotes turn almost entirely on how many templates are genuinely different from each other, which the teardown establishes for free before anyone talks about money.

FAQ

Straight answers.

Should I use a WordPress development company UK based, given you are not?
If you need someone in the building, or your procurement requires a British supplier, yes — and those are real constraints rather than excuses. Otherwise the trade is the usual one: more hours for the budget against a half-day overlap. For WordPress specifically the projects are short enough that the timezone rarely bites during the build. Where it does matter is after launch, so agree the support arrangement in writing rather than assuming it.
Are you a WooCommerce development company UK merchants can hand a live store to?
Calesce is exactly that and it is the reference to check — a live British WooCommerce store the owner has been running themselves, adding products, since we handed it over. What we would ask you to weigh is scale: WooCommerce is excellent up to a point and gets expensive to keep fast beyond a few thousand products with heavy variation. If that is where you are heading, the teardown will say so rather than selling you the build.
WordPress or Shopify for a British store?
Shopify if you want the hard parts rented — hosting, security, PCI compliance and checkout are somebody else's problem, at a monthly fee and with a checkout you cannot change below Plus. WooCommerce if you want to own it, need unusual product structures or content and commerce deeply intertwined, and have someone who will keep it patched. Neither is better. The deciding question is honestly whether anyone on your side will do the maintenance.
Can you fix a site someone else built?
Often, and it is usually cheaper than rebuilding — we will tell you which, including when rebuilding is cheaper and therefore better for us. What we need is access: admin, hosting, and ideally whatever documentation exists. If the previous developer is unreachable and holds the credentials, say so early, because recovering a domain or a hosting account is a slow process and it is better started before anything else.
How do you keep a WordPress site secure?
Fewer plugins, updates applied on an actual schedule rather than when someone remembers, and no abandoned code left installed. Almost every compromised WordPress site we have seen was running a known vulnerability with a patch available. It is not a mysterious problem and it does not need a security product — it needs someone whose job it is, which is either your team or a maintenance arrangement, and it should be explicitly one or the other.
Will I be able to edit it myself?
Yes, and that is the design goal rather than a feature. Content, products, prices and pages should be yours to change without raising a ticket. We hand over the admin, the hosting and the domain, walk your team through what is safe to edit, and say plainly which parts are structural and worth leaving alone. Calesce is the proof that this works in practice.
