Elite IT — a WooCommerce IT store with PayFast

The brief

A browsable IT store with cart, wishlist and real online payments — live in a week.

Elite IT sells two things that do not naturally sit in the same shop. One is hardware — laptops, monitors, routers, printers, keyboards and the accessories that go with them. The other is services: software development, managed IT, cloud, data analytics and consulting. Businesses in that position usually end up with a store for the boxes and a contact form for everything else, and the services, which are usually the better margin, become the part nobody can actually buy.

The brief was to sell both from one place and to have it live in a week. That timeline rules out anything built around a specific catalogue, because the catalogue was still being assembled. The structure had to be general enough to take products the owner would add after us, and simple enough that adding them did not need a developer.

An IT store also has to look like it can be trusted with the order. Someone paying online for a laptop wants to know who they are paying, what happens if it arrives wrong and how to reach a person, and they want to know that before they reach the cart, not after.

The build

A WordPress and WooCommerce build in which services are products. Software development, managed services, cloud and consulting are listed, priced and added to the cart the same way a mouse or a monitor is, under an IT Services category that sits alongside Products and Accessories. That one decision is what turns a services business with a shop attached into a store that sells the whole business.

Finding things is handled in the header rather than left to the shop page: a search box with a category selector, and an all-categories menu that lists every department from laptops and desktops to routers and headsets. The product grid on the home page is tabbed by latest, popularity, top rated, on sale and trending, so the same catalogue answers several different reasons for arriving.

Wishlist and compare sit on every product. Compare matters more here than in most stores, because hardware is bought on specification and people put two laptops side by side before they commit to one.

Trust is stated up front. A band under the hero carries the returns promise (exchange within 30 days) and round-the-clock online support, and the footer carries a street address, a phone number and the policy pages (shipping, refunds and returns, terms, privacy) that a payment gateway wants to see before it approves a merchant.

Checkout was delivered on PayFast. The live store has since moved its gateway to JazzCash, which is the owner's call and exactly the kind of change the build was meant to let them make without us.

Design and setup on day one, the catalogue and categories over days two and three, cart, wishlist, compare and payments on day four, then mobile QA, a test payment and launch. The store is still trading, with 23 products and services listed. We have no access to its orders or analytics, so there are no sales figures here.
